Amos 4:1-6:14, Revelation 2:18-3:6, Psalm 130:1-8, Proverbs 29:21-22
“Lord, if You keep in mind our sins, then who can ever get an answer to his prayers? But You forgive! What an awesome thing this is! That is why I wait expectantly, trusting God to help, for He has promised. I long for Him more than sentinels long for the dawn. O Israel, hope in the Lord; for He is loving and kind and comes to us with armloads of salvation. He Himself shall ransom Israel from her slavery to sin.” Psalm 130:3-8
Can somebody say graveyard shift? “I long for God more than the sentinels long for the dawn.” If you’ve ever worked the night shift, you know how long it can drag on. Your hope is to the see the dawn, the shift is over, and for these guards, the danger has passed. These protectors were on high alert, fight or flight, anticipating an attack in the night. I’m sure they’d be exhausted come morning. They longed for the rising sun, but not as much as the psalmist longed for God.
While fishing in a small boat, a young man of God asked the old preacher how he could flow in the anointing, how he could really touch people’s hearts and see them freed. He went on for a minute when suddenly the old man grabbed his head and thrust it under water. The young minister started to flail and fight back. Just then the wise old man let the young fella go and told him, “When you long for God like you did for air, then you’ll start to understand.”
PRAYER: Lord, I want to long for You more than my next breath. Bring me to that place. Teach me how to listen, how to know Your heart and character. Give me love for the masses and a desire to be obedient. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
