Daniel 5:1-31, II Peter 2:1-22, Psalm 119:113-128, Proverbs 28:19-20
“And you, his successor, O Belshazzar – you knew all of this, yet you have not been humble. For you have defied the Lord of Heaven and brought here these cups from His Temple; and you and your officers and wives and concubines have been drinking wine from them while praising gods of silver, gold, brass, iron, wood, and stone – gods that neither see nor hear nor know anything at all. But you have not praised the God who gives you the breath of life and controls your destiny! And so God sent those fingers to write this message, ‘Mene, Mene, Tekel, Parsin.’” Daniel 5:22-25
Yesterday we talked about Belshazzar’s father and the space of grace he was given to repent and the judgment (which was still a form of grace) that came to him for not repenting. After a season of crisis, Nebuchadnezzer humbled himself and was restored. However, in this instance, we see what happens when grace is not received and sin is continued. Daniel tells him specifically what he has done and no additional mercy is shown because, unlike his father, Belshazzar knew the history and expectation of God. When you know this and have been extended grace, yet refuse to change, the next step will eventually come.
Tekel means that he had been weighed in the balance and had failed the test. This guy obviously didn’t have a bad day in the stock market. He was on a downward trend and the measure of grace was up. People followed his lead and God was setting a precedence to spare those under him. I’m not saying Belshazzar had to be perfect but he knew the seriousness of what he was doing and went head long into it anyway.
PRAYER: Father, help me to not take Your grace for granted. Prompt me to do what is right. Cause my desires to line up with Yours. I break pride off of myself and I ask You to forgive me for any area that needs to be corrected. Help me to submit it to You. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
