Nahum 1:1-3:19, Revelation 8:1-13, Psalm 136:1-26, Proverbs 30:7-9
“O God, I beg two favors from You before I die: First, help me never to tell a lie. Second, give me neither poverty nor riches! Give me just enough to satisfy my needs! For if I grow rich, I may become content without God. And if I am too poor, I may steal and thus insult God’s holy name.” Proverbs 30:8-9
Through the years I have battled with the issues in this proverb. I’ve felt myself drift from the Lord in times of comfort. And, I’ve struggled with trust during times of lack. But through it all He has taught me the meaning of “the poor are rich in faith” because they must keep their eyes on the Lord at all times for provision and comfort. Be careful when your needs are met that you don’t forget it is the Lord who provided. Riches are unpredictable; don’t put all of your stock in them. The Lord, however, is faithful in all times. He’s the one to keep your eyes on. Even should times of poverty come, pray your trust will be strong to keep you from doing inappropriate things to get by.
PRAYER: Lord, my eyes are fixed on You, the author and finisher of my faith. No matter what state I find myself in, I pray You will keep me content and faithful to You. I prefer You to temporal riches any day. You are my great reward. I ask You to keep me from poverty that denies my basic needs as well Lord. I ask Your great mercy and provision in Jesus’ name. Amen.
