I Kings 19:1-21; Acts 12:1-23; Psalm 136:1-26; Proverbs 17:14-15

 

In yesterday’s reading we saw how the prophet Elijah challenged the prophets of Baal to a contest to see who was serving the most powerful god. Ours won out, of course. Afterwards, Elijah had the prophets of the false god Baal eradicated. Today, we see Jezebel being told the news of the slaughter of her priests. She vows to kill Elijah. He hears, he becomes afraid and starts running for his life. And that’s where we pick the story up –

 

“…but he went on a day’s journey into the wilderness. He sat down under a broom tree and prayed that he might die. He said, ‘I have had enough! Lord, take my life, for I’m no better than my fathers.'” (I Kings 19:4)

 

Elijah goes through his spiel with God. God listens without joining in the pity party and then gives him a list of things to do, people to set in order. God hears our cry, He knows when we’ve had enough and He knows how much we can bear. If you are still here then God is not through with you yet. Be patient, all things come together in due season.

 

God hears Elijah but has to set things in place for the next generation before He can bring Elijah home. You and I have an assignment, a task we must fulfill before we are able to leave. Some folks get overwhelmed and take themselves out before the time, either physically or they withdraw mentally. Don’t let the enemy shorten your span or hinder your effectiveness, take authority! If we were talking football I’d tell you to take your stance, start running at your enemy, put your head down and give a few hard hits before you go! Set it up for the next play. You get the picture?!!

 

Under God’s directive, Elijah anoints two new kings and finds his replacement. The Lord then assures Elijah that even though he may feel alone, he is not. The Lord has 7,000 people in Israel who are faithful to Him.

 

Elijah’s new successor is Elisha. When Elisha gets the call, he takes his source of income, a team of oxen, a yoke and plow and dedicates his life to the call. To ensure that he’s serious, Elisha breaks up the wooden yoke and plow, starts a fire and cooks the oxen. He has a sit down dinner with the folks and then sets out for ministry work under the senior prophet Elijah. Wow!

 

Whether you are in Elijah’s or Elisha’s position, get ready, get ready, God has a plan for you. He will never leave you nor forsake you and He will certainly always give you more than you can handle just to prove He’s got you. As the words of the old hymn go, “Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full into His wonderful face, and the things of the world will go strangely dim, in the light of His glory and grace.” You got this, all you need is in Him. Seek Him and He will give you peace, direction and relief.

 

PRAYER:

Lord, sometimes life is so hard I just want to quit. Seems like I’m on the mountain one day and in the valley the next. It gets very discouraging. I lay this life before You and I pray for peace and direction. I need to know You are there. I want to finish my race well and I believe with all of my heart that You are going to see me through. I command the spirits of fear and heaviness to go from me. I receive the blanket of anointed praise. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

From Ricky’s book, Miracle-at-Large, Ricky became an evangelist spreading the word of God through his testimony. He was a fire. He would go in, light it up and encourage people in the places he shared his testimony. When you’re an evangelist, you breeze in and breeze out, and you don’t have to worry about hurting anyone. But that was the start of the ministry. His evangelism was birthed from the book that came out, which gave him a platform. People started following us and we gave them resources and suggested churches to get plugged into. However, we developed a following of people that would not go anywhere else but honestly, it was not in our heart to start a physical church.

With us not wanting to turn people away, we started meeting together as a prayer group and started having a little teaching within the prayer group. But then, we were bursting out of our living room. Our house could squeeze 30 to 60 people in it butt here was not much you can do in it anymore with people wall-to-wall. We had John Mayers and his wife leading worship through singing and playing a guitar. We had all the elements for church, which led to people pressing us to start a church and they wouldn’t go anywhere else. With us growing but not ready for a church, we had to look into bigger spaces and started with one conference room in a hotel. However, we eventually consumed every conference room in the hotel as we continued to grow.

As we grew, we saw a lot of gifts and opportunities. As a result, we wanted to start a physical church where everybody was included and invited. Even if they seemed like they didn’t fit into a“traditional church”, they would be accepted at our church. I sought God and God spoke to my heart and said, “I want you to start a church and I’m going to send everybody that is like you to the church. You will have a church and they’ll be other churches, too. There will be people that I send to those churches, but you will become your own individual church with the people that I’m creating and building for your church.” That’s how we became our own identity and individual church with our own personality that God established because God put this in Ricky’s heart. Everyone from various backgrounds would be welcomed as family and they would have a place for them to go to church in a family… MiraclePlace Church.
