“Whose heart is filled with anguish and sorrow? Who is always fighting and quarreling? Who is the man with bloodshot eyes and many wounds? It is the one who spends long hours in the taverns, trying out new mixtures. Don’t let the sparkle and the smooth taste of strong wine deceive you. For in the end it bites like a poisonous serpent; it stings like an adder. You will see hallucinations and have delirium tremens, and you will say foolish, silly things that would embarrass you when sober. You will stagger like a sailor tossed at sea, clinging to a swaying mast. And afterwards you will say, ‘I didn’t even know it when they beat me up…Let’s go and have another drink!’” Proverbs 23:29-35
This is what I call the addict scripture. Anyone who has struggled in this area knows exactly what it means. Amazing how the Bible describes it to the tee. Just goes to show, there’s nothing new under the sun. God knows precisely where we are when we think we’re hiding in the substance. If you struggle with addiction, no matter if it’s gambling, eating, drugs, sex or alcohol, I want you to know that God is able to free you. He did it for me and He will do it for you because God has no respect for one person over the other. He loves you and is not ashamed of you. He wants you to be able to walk with your head up without the weight of that oppression.
PRAYER: Lord, I pray for myself and those who struggle with addiction in any form. I ask You to free us and give us a testimony of Your great power. I trust You and have complete faith that You are able to break any addiction that I have. I am free. I am whole. I am forgiven. I am able to release the pain and struggle that brought me to addiction. I forgive too. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen. |
