“A mirror reflects a man’s face, but what he is really like is shown by the kind of friends he chooses.” Proverbs 27:19
When I was a child, my dad used to monitor the people I wanted to hang out with. He’d say birds of a feather flock together. I’d tell him I didn’t do some of the things they did. He would in turn reply, if the law shows up, they aren’t asking who did what, they’ll take the whole lot in. Come to find out that’s the truth. And while you shouldn’t base your entire life on what other people think, we do need to give some consideration to who we surround ourselves with.
The Bible also says in I Corinthians 15:33, “Do not be deceived, bad company corrupts good character.” People will rub off on you and it’s typically the bad overcoming the good. Just think of the old adage, one bad apple ruins the barrel. Or how about this, you ever see a bad strawberry in the container. Well, if you don’t get that nasty one out away from the others, the whole container will be ruined. This is also a good lesson on looking a little deeper to gauge what type of people you’re dealing with.
PRAYER: Lord, help me to use wisdom and discernment with the folks I surround myself with. I understand my choices in this area are a reflection of myself and my values. Encircle me with people who will sharpen me and encourage my growth. Help me to do the same. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
