Joshua 13:1-14:15; Luke 18:1-17; Psalm 85:1-13; Proverbs 13:7-8

“Balaam also the son of Beor, the soothsayer, did the children of Israel slay with the sword.” (Joshua 13:22)

In chapter 13 of Joshua, we read that Joshua is now old and stricken in years, yet there remains much land to be conquered and possessed. So the Lord starts to give instruction to Joshua and rehashes Israel’s history so that Joshua can leave a legacy and pass the baton. In the historical account, God points out Balaam and calls him a soothsayer. I think we can learn some great lessons from Balaam’s life.

Balaam means subverter or devourer of people. His very name means one not of the people. In life you must find your tribe of people. I suggest God’s people (a church that has your heart). Balaam had a great reputation as a prophet who could pronounce a curse or blessing. Never forget the bigger you get and the more God uses you, the greater the temptation to misuse His delegated authority.

Balak, king of Moab, wanted Balaam to curse Israel so he called Balaam for the job. Balaam had a secret character defect in his heart. He wanted money and rewards. When Balak invited Balaam to come and curse Israel he told Balak that he would come but could only speak what God told him.

Balaam prayed to God asking for permission to go with Balak. God told him not to go. Balaam persisted and God finally conceded but gave strict instruction for Balaam to only say what He told him. Remember, if you keep asking God for something to which He has said no, He is a gentleman and will eventually release you to do what you want but it may end up killing you in the end. Best to heed what He speaks to your heart and trust Him.

At first Balaam was faithful to outwardly reject the honor and riches but in his heart he desired them. Part of him was afraid to blatantly disobey God. He figured out a way to defeat Israel without actually cursing them. He shared a sure way with Balak that would cause the Israelites to bring a curse on themselves. He instructed the king to send heathens in their midst to introduce the Israelites to their idol worship and thereby cause them to ensnare themselves. At this point, Balaam is then called a soothsayer. Now Balaam didn’t actually curse them, did he? But was he being obedient? Have you ever found yourself in such a position of compromise?

No matter how many times we are tempted to go against God, we must stand. No matter how much money, safety or honor is promised, we must not betray God or His people. Agree with me to choose to be a true prophet or person of God and not disobey or mislead others to the detriment of God’s people. (To read more about Balaam see Numbers 22-26)

PRAYER:

God, I will follow You all the days of my life. I will wholeheartedly follow You and declare only what You say, never to go against You and Your will for my life and others. I choose to love You and serve You above all others and all things in this world. You are my God and today I give You all glory, honor and praise in Jesus’ name. Amen.
