| I Samuel 29:1-31:13, John 11:55-12:19, Psalm 118:1-18, Proverbs 15:24-26
“But Judas Iscariot, the disciple who would soon betray Him, said, ‘That perfume was worth a year’s wages. It should have been sold and the money given to the poor.’ Not that he cared for the poor – he was a thief, and since he was in charge of the disciples’ money, he often stole some for himself.” John 12:4-6
Wow. I guess Judas’ story should cause us to reflect. He walked with Jesus in the flesh and still didn’t get it. He was more concerned with what knowing Jesus could do for him rather than a spiritual transformation. Our focus should always be on the latter to avoid the temporary and shallowness of the former.
I’ve always found it hard to believe God would put a thief in charge of the money bag. Amazing, right?! I’m sure when we started pastoring, some people probably just shook their heads, wondering what God was thinking. I must admit, I felt that way myself sometimes. I mean, there were plenty of fine folks out there with better backgrounds that could do the job, why us? Through the years, I’ve learned that God looks deeper, He sees the untapped potential, He gives opportunity. We all have to choose which path we will take. Will we seek God’s hand or His heart? Will we go below the surface to truly know Him, or will we skim the top for surface blessings?
God has chosen you for the unique gift you are to His Body. You bring something to the table and have a specific group of people that only you can reach. Step to and get busy. And, if you are a thief, I have a scripture for you, “If you are a thief, quit stealing. Instead, use your hands for good hard work, and then give generously to others in need.” Ephesians 4:28 NLT
PRAYER: Lord, forgive me for slacking. I want to fulfill my potential and bless You and Your people in the best way possible. Teach me to not cling to the “money bag” of things that will only benefit me here but rather the spiritual truths and disciplines that will carry into eternity. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. |
