“It is hard to stop a quarrel once it starts, so don’t let it begin.” Proverbs 17:14
Shut your mouth…In Romans 12:18, we are told to live in peace with all people as much as possible on our end. Not all people are agreeable but it generally takes two to start and keep an argument going. The wisdom in the Psalm is to not let the fight start. Is it really that important? Do you always have to be right? Is this the hill you want to die on? If things are heated, take a step back. Talk about it later when everyone is cooled off. Measure your words. Don’t intentionally inflict pain with insults. REAL TALK – watching your attitude, your words and the inflection of your voice could literally cause you to dodge a bullet.
PRAYER: Lord, I truly don’t know people inside and out like You. I don’t understand why some folks are insulted at certain things that don’t bother others. I’m not sure what has happened in their life to cause them to be sensitive, angry or indifferent. I know myself, and I know that, while not perfect, I have the advantage of being born-again and I hold myself to a higher standard. Help me to be a peacemaker and not a provoker. Help me to take a little wrong if the situation calls for it. I love You Father and I just want to do what is right in Your eyes, even if that means surrendering my right to be right. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
