Jeremiah 33:1-34:22, I Timothy 4:1-16, Psalm 89:1-13, Proverbs 25:23-24
“Don’t waste time arguing over foolish ideas and silly myths and legends. Spend your time and energy in the exercise of keeping spiritually fit. Bodily exercise is all right, but spiritual exercise is much more important and is a tonic for all you do. So, exercise yourself spiritually, and practice being a better Christian because that will help you not only now in this life, but in the next life too. This is the truth, and everyone should accept it. We work hard and suffer much in order that people will believe it, for our hope is in the living God who died for all, and particularly for those who have accepted His salvation.” I Timothy 4:7-10
Through the years people have tried to include things into the basic truths of Christianity. Some spread doubt by comparing Christianity to other pagan religions, but while there may be some similarity, the differences are vast. Paul is encouraging us to not get caught up in all this unproductive conversation and a waste of good study time. Instead, he tells us to exercise ourselves spiritually.
When a person is devoted to working out there are several things they do. Sometimes they seek the advice or instruction of someone who has been around the gym for a while. Then they familiarize themselves with the equipment. They choose some exercises depending on the muscle groups they want to work and finally they execute the exercise.
Christianity isn’t much different. In order to work your spirituality, it’s helpful to find a church where you can learn from the pastor and glean from other believers. Get to know the instruction manual. The Bible is our greatest tool in order to know God. God will impress on you an area that needs to improve in order to help you grow. Find a word for that area and begin to work that muscle of faith.
PRAYER: Lord, I ask You to help me develop my life spiritually. Keep me from deception and things that are a waste of time. I want to know and walk with You 24/7. You are my best friend, and my heart wants to find out everything about You. Teach me Lord. It’s in Your name I pray. Amen.
