I Chronicles 19:1-21:30, Romans 2:25-3:8, Psalm 11:1-7, Proverbs 19:10-12
“God was very displeased with the census, and He punished Israel for it. Then David said to God, ‘Please forgive my guilt for doing this foolish thing.’” I Chronicles 21:7-8
Okay, a little background. Earlier in the chapter we see David being influenced by the enemy of our souls, Satan, to perform a census or a count of the people. His lead commander tried to talk him out of it, but David pressed on, and the count was taken.
So, what’s the problem? Well, in chapter 20 we’re told about some very successful campaigns that were won, yet here David is doing a headcount on his warriors. It seems simple, but even commander Joab recognized it as a slight on God. Like God didn’t just provide all these solid wins, you know.
See, God wants us to recognize Him as our source and our protector. He wants to relieve the pressure we feel of doing it on our own. While He places people and resources in our path, it is ultimately our relationship with Him that produces the victory we’re looking for. David didn’t have to worry about the mule, he just needed to load the wagon. The mule, or God, is reliable, He’s there and ready to roll. If you’re overwhelmed or tempted to rely on help outside of God, resist the enemy’s chatter, settle your spirit, center your thoughts on the Lord and trust that He is faithful. He’ll send the warriors or the resources as you need it because He’s an on-time God. Hey, shout somebody!
PRAYER: Father, forgive me for relying on myself. I’m going to do my level best to do my part and trust You to do Yours. Remind me frequently that my peace, joy, and success stem from my connection to You, I don’t have to grasp. Help my people to know You and surrender to the draw of Holy Spirit. Save us, forgive us, keep us right, in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
