“Then all the world will know that Israel has a God, and this whole assembly will know that it is not by sword or by spear that the Lord saves, for the battle is the Lord’s. He will hand you over to us.” (I Samuel 17:46c-47)
David had an extraordinary relationship with the Lord that was cultivated during his time tending sheep on the quiet backside of a mountain. Back in the day there were no television sets, radios, best sellers or even Maverick City. That’s not to say they didn’t have their own distractions but, just as it is today, for the one who desires to know God the opportunity is there.
If you were confronted with danger on that mountain there were no cell phones, police officers or emergency services to come to the rescue. So, David learned dependence on the God that he worshiped. I appreciate the understanding he had concerning their relationship. Although he had his part to play, David totally knew it was by God’s hand that any victory was gained. He totally trusted God to come through. That is so huge!
That trust was developed over a period of time. In I Samuel 17:34-37, David shares how he encountered bears and lions that were coming after the sheep under his care. He said that he would grab the animal by its fur and slay it. That’s one bad lil dude. Then he stated it was the hand of God that had delivered him. That boy knew where his bread was buttered! Yes, indeed!
When it came time to face the huge nine foot giant in his life, David wasn’t afraid, but rather he was annoyed that this man would dare try to shame God by humiliating His people. Goliath acted like God couldn’t handle his tail. David understood covenant and relationship so he dug deep into his cabinet of experience and with a righteous indignation declared that this day Goliath was going down. And he did.
David boasted on the Lord and the Lord showed Himself strong! Trust God. Develop your friendship with Him. And when the day your giant rears its head and the battle begins, then you will have the confidence to run at Goliath instead of away from him. Do your part and be assured that the Lord will do His.
PRAYER:
Lord, I lay my life in Your hands. You have always proven Yourself faithful and I know You will see me through every challenge in life. I pray to distinctly know Your voice. I pray I will know You so well that I could go bear hunting with a switch and know that You are going to get me through. My confidence is in You Father. In the name of Jesus I pray. Amen. |
